How this class has affected my ideas about being a filmmaker

This class if anything has strengthened my resolve to be a filmmaker, I loved every aspect of this class and learning hands on by doing projects instead of just reading from the book. I learned that I like pretty much everything in production and post production from shooting, editing, lighting, sound, and everything in between. I do not like pre-production too much, I understand why it is necessary and that it saves a lot of time later on and that it is a good practice to use, I just end up somewhat second guessing myself like if this would be better if this looked like this or used this instead of this. I also don’t like being a producer that much but every other job I liked a lot. I learned a tremendous amount from this class and I had a lot of fun making the projects. I only had an admittedly loose understanding of film making in general before I took this class, I still don’t know much but it really taught me a lot.

Plans for next semester

My plans for the next semester are to take as many film classes I can, and then try to get some online classes as well. I have also got to take a physical education class so I was thinking about fencing, aikido, or jiu jitsu. Since I commute to UNCW from Jacksonville I try to take as many classes as I can around the evening time so I do not have to wake up extremely early. I definitely want to take more classes where I will learn about the production side of film studies, I’m just more interested in production than the theory. However, I do have a respect for the theory and want to learn as much as I can about that as well. I want to take the editing class as soon as I can, since I have always liked editing. I also want to take the lighting class as soon as I can, I do not really want to be a gaffer but I have always been interested in lighting and especially when and how to use shadows.

My experience editing the Experimental Project

Shooting and editing the experimental project was really fun for me. Since it was an experimental I got to really play around with angles and different editing techniques. I slowed down and sped up the time and I was really proud of the edit where I used the evaporating rain footage over top of the sand at the beach. Our quote was “It was so hot they never left their house” so Nick and I tried to brainstorm ideas that would show how hot it was. I looked up a bunch of different editing tricks I could use in the project that I will probably use again some time. Overall during this project, I felt like I learned a lot, through the shooting and the editing of the film and it was a lot of fun. I am proud of the product we ended up with and I feel like other people enjoyed it as well.

Master Shot Scene Producer

I was the Producer for the Master Shot Scene project and I feel like this project was very rewarding in terms of experience. Honestly I did not have to do the entire producing job by myself because my group members helped a lot in terms of finding actors and extras and locations. They also helped a lot with the set dressing. I was in charge of making the mock up budget in which we came out under budget which was good. We ended up using a lot of stuff that we already had or finding stuff for cheap from the dollar store. I made sure all of the correct forms were signed and that they were scanned correctly. I ended up reading over the rules multiple times convinced that I was missing something but I could not find anything. We got lucky in that the location for the shoot was entirely by itself with no windows or any openings to the streets or people walking by so we only needed one form signed to use the location. Overall I really liked the assignment and I think it turned out well. ...

Pre-production Materials

Making the previsualization and pre-production materials was something that I was not very enthused about. I had never done anything that thought out before, most of my pre-planning before was mostly just thinking of something that I thought was a good idea and then making a poorly made script and rolling with that. However, now that I've done this I see how helpful and how useful a tool that it is. My main job was making the budget however the group all looked over what everyone was in charge of making and gave each other notes. This is definitely something that I will do for future projects outside of requirements for class because of how it really fleshes out the idea and gives you a representation for how it will look and not just an idea in your head that may be hard to explain to someone else. The hardest thing about making the budget was finding prices of props that we need and creating an approximate price. So basically making the budget was the hardest part of making the b...

Ideas for Role in Master Shot Scene

With my role being producer, I am going to help the Director find the location, actors, and props. I will need to fill out the forms to rent the equipment for the days we need them. I will dress the set, supervise what the actors are wearing, and keep track of the props. I will keep a close eye on the shots for continuities sake and make sure everything matches. If anything looks out of order or a shot is missing and it is overlooked I will bring it up to the director. I will try my best to keep everything in order and make the shoot go smoothly. I will also be responsible for data wrangling and I will also put the corresponding files into Premiere Pro and sync the audio and video and then transfer them to the editor. I will be keeping track of the paperwork needed, all the forms, storyboards, overheads, budget, scripts, shot lists, and things of that nature. I will scan all of the necessary paperwork and put them into a pdf format and upload them to the google drive. So most of my job...

Reflection on Vox Pop and B-roll

The Vox Pop I think went very well, everyone that was interviewed was really good on camera they were not nervous and were very willing to answer the questions and followed the directions of where to stand and to speak very well. It went really smoothly there weren't any re-shoots that had to be done. The B-roll also went really well I thought, we got footage of the club in a more serious light where it was the time for instruction and having to pay attention to Chris from our expert interview while he led through some warm up and new routines. Then after that we got some footage of the club members just kind of messing around like they're all friends and practicing but showing the more light-hearted and fun side of the club, which to me will make it seem very welcoming to people who may be interested in joining. Overall it was just a really fun time.
